Are you carrying buckets, or building a pipeline?

One story. One question. You may recognize this.
Before the story begins, you might already know the question it's asking.
You are good at your job, and you have wondered what would happen if you couldn't do it for a while.
You are new to a business and nobody has explained how it works.
Someone you respect handed you this book and said, “Read this.”
If one of these sounds like you, this short book speaks to you.
Two cousins.
Two ways to work.
Pablo and Bruno grow up in the same village, hired for the same job: carry water from the river to the town square, a penny a bucket. Bruno is thrilled. A hundred buckets a day, steady money, nothing to think about. He tells Pablo to stop overthinking it and enjoy the work.
Pablo can't stop thinking about it. Every bucket he carries is a bucket he'll have to carry again tomorrow, and the day he can't carry buckets is the day the money stops. So while Bruno spends his evenings at the tavern, Pablo spends his digging — a pipeline, by hand, after a full day of carrying buckets of his own.
For a long time, this makes Pablo look like the fool. He's doing two jobs' worth of work for one job's pay, and Bruno never lets him forget it.
Then the pipeline reaches the village. And the water starts flowing whether Pablo is there to carry it or not.
That's the whole book, and it's the reason leaders have been handing it to new people for 25 years: it doesn't ask you to believe anything. It just asks you to notice which one you've been.
The book follows what each choice leads to. Then it asks you which of the two you are.
What you will learn.

Short book.
Lasting question.
Readers say the story makes a simple idea easy to follow. Many call it short and quick to read. Several said it made them ask whether their own work is a bucket job or a pipeline, and readers who work in regular jobs said they saw themselves in the bucket carrier.
Worth knowing: A few readers wanted a fresher edition — fair, since it was first published in 2001. Burke is updating the facts. It's a story that explains one idea well, not a step-by-step manual.
